The rivers

Two of the most famous and ancient rivers of Greece and the Balkans, Awos and Voidomatis ( Vikos ), flow through Konitsa and the surrounding area.

It is worth referring to those rivers since nowadays they are the "heart" of many organised kinds of alternative tourism.

Awos

This ancient river flows between two high mountains of the North-west part of Ipiros, Gamila or Timfis and Smolikas, crossing deep ravines and challenging canyons, through lush wooded vegetation.

Awos is a significant part of the protected National Forest Vikos - Awos.

The river starts from the heart of Pindos ( Mavrovouni ), flows through the Greek State and ends up in the Adriatic Sea through Albania. The estuaries of the river are a few miles north of Corfu. The total length of the river is 260km, 80km of which are found in the Greek mainland.

The part of the river between the village of Vovousa and the town of Konitsa is where sports such as rafting and canoe-kayak take place. The traditional villages of Zagorohoria are located in this area.

Voidomatis

DSCF4750This river flows through the heart of the National Forest Vikos - Awos and ends up connecting with Awos just before it leaves the Greek borders.

Voidomatis is famous for its springs and its crystal clear waters. It is the continuity of the river Vikos and starts exactly at the point of connection of its springs with the big river. Its biggest part flows through steep canyons while its waters reach very low temperatures even in the summer.

Throughout its length it is the ideal scenery for watersports ( rafting, canoe-kayak ). The traditional and famous villages of Aristi and Papigos are separated by its waters.
